The 9 Habits of Happy People, by Jameson L. Scott

“What is happiness and why do we want it?” This is one of the first chapters of the book  The 9 Habits of Happy People  by Jameson L. Scott. As he points out, happiness comes largely from the ability to achieve what we need or to solve problems in our life.

Thus,  we want happiness because it means self-fulfillment and personal satisfaction. Each one achieves their happiness in a unique way, although Jameson teaches us some guidelines that happy people have carried throughout history.

Why its author recommends it

First, The 9 Habits of Happy People is presented as a book that calls for individual action and does not seek self-help. We are encouraged to change from movement and not only from thought.

For this reason, the writer informs us that to follow the book we are going to have to leave our “comfort zone” zone. It will be the only way to integrate the 9 habits he talks about in our lives.

What’s more, he assures that after reading the book and following the guidelines in our real life, we will not have to read more self-help books  which, on the other hand, he harshly criticizes. From experience, it thus invites us to self-discovery to get to do only what we need to do: live our life as the only way to be happy.

What do happy people do?

We are going to review those 9 habits that Jameson talks about, separating two blocks. Happy people:

Don’t let the future rule the present

  • They socialize without seeking approval : happy people know that to be happy they have to be of integrity and not make of themselves what others want. She knows that doing so gives them power over her. A happy person does not cultivate a false image and knows that he cannot be liked by everyone.
  • They love themselves : happy people take care of themselves, they pamper themselves, they empower themselves. You don’t play the victim, you don’t insult yourself, you don’t reject yourself. In addition, it knows its possibilities and tries to achieve what depends on it.

  • They accept their circumstances and pursue what they want : they distinguish between conformity and acceptance, believe in changes, and fight before they give up. What’s more, they constantly improve themselves, appreciate life and make the most of it.
  • They connect with the present : this is one of the fundamental habits of happy people. It is about living in the moment and putting aside another time that is not the current one. To do this, they spend a few minutes meditating a day and then immerse their thinking in what they are doing.
  • They do things they fear and desire : they use opportunities as challenges to overcome fears. They know what makes them panic and they act to deal with it. We are talking about people who have fears but who do not stop them, and have even managed to introduce them into their lives as a source of motivation.

Learn and take care of your rest

In addition to all of the above, happy people also :

  • They learn from everything around them : they recognize failure and fail better and better until they succeed. They are aware that to learn they have to act, gain strength and confidence.
  • They rest correctly : they sleep more than six hours and less than eight, they disconnect two hours a day from what is mandatory, they rest without technology, etc.
  • They eat and exercise in a balanced way. They consider the connection with their body a fundamental communication channel for their well-being, so they pay attention to it and take care of it.
  • They take care of body posture and correct breathing : happy people have observed that there are certain postures that limit our actions and what we communicate. Finally, he places importance on breathing and how the air enters his body.
