Willpower is a psychological skill that we can all enhance and mature if we know the keys.
Keys to improving willpower

We all set resolutions for ourselves throughout the year, especially in January and September. We started very excited, but later in many cases they were abandoned. So that this does not happen, keep in mind several keys to improve willpower.

And it is that the motivation, with the passage of the days, is lost, since the obligations arrive, the fatigue, the emotion of the novelty ends … And that is when the abandonment begins to be considered. To avoid this, we have to use our willpower, but do we know exactly what will is? We are going to define it and then go into how to work with it.

What is willpower

It is about the ability or capacity that a person has to pursue a certain goal, overcoming difficulties, distractions and obstacles. Of course, it is not only reflected in the achievement of achievement, but also in effort when the current does not push us in this direction. That is, do not give up, or give up, or give in to desires even though the results are not immediate.

Two of the most typical examples are  quitting smoking and playing sports.  At first the motivation is great, but later, our mind is putting us obstacles and enabling excuses to leave, and since it is something that costs, we need to overcome these obstacles based on improving willpower.

Effective keys to improve willpower

To improve willpower it is necessary to be aware that it is a psychological skill that must be worked on, since it is acquired and strengthened throughout life, so the use of these keys will be of great help.

Set clear and realistic goals

Many times we propose goals that are impossible to meet, fallacies that in our mind represent success, but that do not correspond to the margins that reality gives us or with what we can achieve in the times that we have set ourselves. A very common example is wanting to lose so much weight and tone so much that in 1 month the results equivalent to a year’s work are reflected.

This, at first, may seem exciting, but when reality prevails, we will see that we have to take into account our constitution, age, etc. , and that there are certain achievements that we will not be able to accelerate, no matter how great our desire. This is how frustration, guilt, despair arise, and of course the consequence is to throw in the towel.

This is why it is so important to  have well-defined and structured objectives. For example, putting yourself in the hands of a professional who guides the diet that best suits what you want to achieve. Not only because he has studied and works on it, but because we can use his experience to achieve what we want, in addition to having a strong opinion that tells us to what extent what we want is good for us.

Divide tasks into small subtasks

If, for example, you start studying a long course on some subject and think about everything you have to assimilate to pass, you will probably be overwhelmed. On the other hand, if you divide it by subjects or topics, and these also divide them into weekly sections, and in turn these into daily points to study, what was a great height becomes small ramps that you can overcome without difficulty, right?

Well, that’s what it consists of, dividing the big tasks that we have imposed on ourselves into small subtasks so that it is easier and more affordable to carry them out.

Woman planning

Plan subtasks using a calendar

The classic ‘tomorrow I start’ is not valid, because that is how weeks and months go by and then stress and guilt for having procrastinated. You have set the objectives, the time they will take and the subtasks, so get to work!

Make a calendar and schedule with the daily distribution of the subtasks, establish times that you can meet without problems, not too short, not too long and at times of the day when you have no obligations, so that the stress level does not rise.

As you move forward, you will see how your way of proceeding will be reinforced. You will see the results, you will enjoy its consequences. Thus, when the habit is well established, the volume of will that you will have to use will be reduced. What used to cost is now simply an automatism.

Limit the number of goals

It is not advisable to fill our agenda with goals that require great will. Ration your will, just as you plan time. Both are two limited resources, although on occasion it may seem otherwise.

Finally, point out an idea. Reducing the level of will that we use to sustain our day to day is a good sign that our vital planning is good. It means that we have been able to generate a current and that we are enjoying it.
