Anyone has a bad day, yes, but it can also completely modify the week. It directly affects our mood, which in turn affects the way we relate to our family and friends. It makes us angry and negative people, with whom it is uncomfortable or tiring to communicate.

The most uncomfortable thing about having a bad day is being in contact with other people. On the one hand, we need to vent, but we don’t want to burden others with our problems, which makes us even more frustrated.

What makes us have a bad day?

There are numerous conditions of a bad day. From spilled coffee on the shirt we just put on to an early argument with your partner. At work, there are also conditions: a traffic jam before arriving, a near deadline, a broken machine, an unfortunate comment … All these factors, when added together, directly affect our calm and, depending on our natural levels of stress , will make us explode at some point.

Identify the determining factors

As we have said, it is the details that, in short, make our day a “bad day”. When we consider that we are having a bad day, we do so based on facts or circumstances on which we pay our attention, oversizing them in importance; however, they  do not constitute more than that, details. The moment we understand that the events that we must consider important are other, we will begin to downplay misfortunes.

Worry about what’s important

In this way, there are facts and circumstances that deserve our attention, and even that we become concerned. However, there are many others who do not deserve it and who, by our fixation on them, end up ruining their day and causing a significant emotional imbalance.

Put aside the non-priority

On many occasions, and under the umbrella of a negative valence state of mind, many of us tend to overestimate the importance of negative events, when many times they constitute trifles. Everything is based on our priority list. Why put ahead something that normally, when everything goes as expected, we do not pay attention?

To help this not happen, it is essential to be clear about what we care about, what we want to work properly and what we do not want to give up.

Enjoy what you like

Related to the previous point, at the top of our list of priorities should be our hobbies or favorite activities, those with which we enjoy and that make us happy.

Contributing to a good mood will help to end negative emotions. Whether it is taking a walk through your favorite place, shutting yourself up to read a good book, cooking that recipe that you like so much or meeting your favorite person, doing what we like, however ephemeral, helps greatly to lift our spirits..

Any kind of physical exercise makes our body release endorphins, hormones of happiness, the cause of happiness that invades us after a good training session.

In addition to helping to secrete this hormone, exercise, especially when directed (as in a gym class), helps us to disconnect. Thus, we relax the mind and concentrate on performing an activity that absorbs all our attention, putting aside the fear of the future that arises from those problems we anticipate.

Perhaps the smile is the most genuine expression of happiness. In addition, there are studies that show that by adopting the characteristic expression of a certain emotion, we can reach an emotional state of the same valence as that emotion. This means that feeling happy makes us smile, and that smiling makes us feel happy.

Studies tell us that the position of our mouth (the smile) causes the brain to generate dopamine, another hormone of happiness. To “trick” our brain in this way, we can adopt a smile for a few seconds, or half a minute, long enough for dopamine to appear. We can also help ourselves with a pencil to fix the posture.

Ultimately, it is important not to get carried away by negative emotions caused by details that lead to what we call a “bad day.” There are other aspects of our life that are really negative, and if we let the details influence us, we will hardly bear the real problems. Likewise, attending to what causes us a bad day can prevent us from seeing the positive in our lives, which is a lot.
